Africans Rising Movement (ARM)

The Africans Rising Movement (ARM) is a pan-African initiative established in 2017, with the goal of uniting civil society organizations and individuals to advocate for change, justice, and dignity across the African continent.

With a membership exceeding 30,000 individuals and 800 organizations across the four corners of the African continent; the ARM fosters collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and solidarity among progressive leaders and groups. Through its mission of promoting social justice and human rights, ARM addresses critical issues such as corruption, land rights, and climate justice, while supporting grassroots organizations and nurturing the next generation of African leaders through leadership mentorship programmes.

In 2019 in Ghana and Senegal, the ARM created an artistic activism project in collaboration with ActionAid Denmark to encourage youth’s participation in social and political issues. The pilot phase of this programme was further expanded to Central and Eastern Africa. Under its “Borderless Africa” initiative, the movement during the 2023 African Liberation Week in Ghana championed an advocacy for the abolition of visa requirements for intra-African travel, as well as the removal of all border restrictions, and the mass roll-out of the African passport, including making it available to Africans in the diaspora.

ARM has been vocal in driving a robust advocacy for freedom of speech in Africa. In 2021, it rolled a mechanism to ensure the release of 80,000 journalists and activists across the African continent, who have been brutalized and detained by African leaders for demanding good governance.
