Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala made history in 2021 as the first woman and first African to become Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). A globally renowned economist and development expert, she previously served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and helped secure a historic debt relief deal for the country.
At the WTO, she has made significant contributions to international finance and trade. Throughout her career, Okonjo-Iweala has partnered with various international organisations, including the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and the Global Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), where she played pivotal roles in addressing global food security, curbing trade disruptions, stabilizing global markets, and improving access to vaccines in developing nations.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s groundbreaking achievements earns her AfriHeritage’s ‘African Lifetime Achievement Award’ for her remarkable contributions to global trade, stabilizing market disruptions and being a Great Ambassador of the African Continent.
